Thankful.

For flowers that bloom about our feet,
Father, we thank Thee.
For tender grass so fresh, so sweet,
Father, we thank Thee.
For the song of bird and hum of bee,
For all things fair we hear or see,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

For blue of stream and blue of sky,
Father, we thank Thee.
For pleasant shade of branches high,
Father, we thank Thee.
For fragrant air and cooling breeze,
For beauty of the blooming trees,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

For this new morning with its light,
Father, we thank Thee.
For rest and shelter of the night,
Father, we thank Thee
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

Hummingbirds, costumes, trees…

Spent the past few days with just a few of my favorite things.  My boys, blue skies, hummingbirdds, green leaves and sunshine through the trees.

Janet, the hummingbirds photos are for you – thank you for the hummingbird feeder!

Blue skies and water…

I have a time machine.  It’s not fancy, it’s not complex, it’s not especially scientific.  It’s the combination of blue skies and water…the two together can transport me to any number of memories, of places I’ve been and days I’ve had that involved the same two ingredients.  Floating in a pool on a warm Arizona fall day, in my head, I’m floating on an inflatable raft in the Mediterranean, under a hot Italian sky…the raft a hard-won prize from my parents, after countless hours of whining and wheedling.  Or, I am body-surfing in the warm waters off Kailua Beach, on the island of Oahu…young, tanned, looking like an islander myself.

Add an airplane buzzing across the blue sky, and I am transported to the beaches of California…to any number of high school and college days that were spent laying on the sand, watching people surf, reading a book, and gossiping with friends, while a plane crosses back and forth above the horizon, trailing a banner behind it.

As sun sets, I see myself walking along a Eastern shore, collecting seashells with my aunt on Gandy’s Beach, getting ready to head back to the house and settle in for a dinner of fresh corn and seafood.

Or farther back in time, playing on the Jersey shore as toddler, thinking to myself that the ocean, brown and blue at the same time, reminded me of iced tea.

All these memories, have me climbing out of the pool feeling intensely blessed to have had so many moments in the sun, so many dreamy days surrounded by cool waters and azure skies, so many with the sand between my toes…

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me),
It’s always our self we find in the sea.
