A person can learn a lot from a dog, even a loopy one like ours. Marley taught me about living each day with unbridled exuberance and joy, about seizing the moment and following your heart. He taught me to appreciate the simple things-a walk in the woods, a fresh snowfall, a nap in a shaft of winter sunlight. And as he grew old and achy, he taught me about optimism in the face of adversity. Mostly, he taught me about friendship and selflessness and, above all else, unwavering loyalty.

We love the night and its quiet; and there is no night that we love so well as that on which the moon is coffined in clouds. ~Fitz-James O’Brien

I remember walking home one night from class, my freshman year in college. My fellow class and dorm mate was crossing campus with me under a huge, impossibly bright, full moon. We paused outside of Scripps Cottage to drink it in, gazing at the sky, and my friend laughed and said, “What if there were people on the moon, gazing back at us on Earth, saying, ‘What a beautiful Earth it is tonight?'”

I think about that almost every time I look at a moonlit sky, and smile.

Waking up this morning, I smile. Twenty-four brand new hours are before me. I vow to live fully in each moment. -Thích Nhất Hạnh

Can hardly believe sometimes that this passes for a winter morning. Coffee, sunshine, chirping birds… #blessed.
