One of our favorite HandsOn Phoenix volunteer events is the Rise & Dine breakfast at Home Base Youth Services, a small central Phoenix shelter for young people. We brought bananas and strawberries today to contribute to their morning meal, and as usual, it was a very nice morning, working alongside people that enjoy giving back to their community. The kids always are so polite, and clap for us when breakfast is served (totally unnecessary, but appreciated nonetheless). Our team leader pays for the breakfast ingredients now, out of her own pocket, because funding has become so tight for the organization, and we volunteers have started contributing to the meal as well. Home Base requires the young people there to follow a strict program of education and/or employment training, and prepares them for healthy independent living.
